Do you know of a historic place that is important to your community, region, or province? You can nominate it for designation as a historic place! Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Make sure the place hasn’t already been designated as a historic place.
Step 2: Think about what makes the place important
- Is the place associated with someone famous or a historic event?
- If it is a building or structure, is the architecture special?
- Does the place have special meaning because of its landscape, spiritual or cultural associations?
Step 3: Consider your answers to the questions above. Is the place important to
- All of Saskatchewan? Contact your provincial registrar for information about the Provincial Heritage Property designation program
- Your local community? Go to Step 4!
Step 4: Seek a Municipal Heritage Property designation
- In Saskatchewan, this means the place will be officially recognized as a historic place and will be given legal protection.
Step 5: To get the process started, contact your local municipal office to find out what information they need.
- This will include an explanation of why you think the place is important. You may also need to supply photographs, as well as historical research if appropriate
- Some communities have a formal application form to fill out while others may only require a letter outlining your request.
Step 6: Once you have completed your request for designation, the process is in full swing!
- An evaluation of the place will be done.
- The time needed to complete this process varies from case to case.
How can I get a historic place listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places?
All historic places officially recognized at the municipal, provincial, and federal level will eventually be placed on the Canadian Register.
