Get a place formally recognized in Newfoundland and Labrador

Cape RaceDo you know of a historic place that is important to your community, region, or province? You can nominate it for designation as a historic place! Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Make sure the place hasn’t already been designated as a historic place. designated

Step 2: Think about what makes the place important. remember

  • Is the place associated with someone famous or a historic event?
  • If it’s a building, is the architecture special?
  • Does the place have special meaning because of its landscape, spiritual or cultural associations?

Step 3: Contact the Registrar of Newfoundland and Labrador: phoning

  • The Registrar will be able to direct you through the process of designation.
  • The Registrar will be able to tell you whether your local municipality may be able to designate the place as being locally significant.

Step 4: If you think the place is important to all of Newfoundland and Labrador, you will want to seek a provincial designation through the Heritage Foundation. award

  • In Newfoundland and Labrador, provincial designation means the place will be officially recognized as a historic place. A bronze plaque will identify it as a historic place.
  • Provincially significant structures and heritage districts are designated by the Heritage Foundation; if the historic place you have in mind falls outside of this description, contact the provincial registrar.

  • The application will give you the chance to explain why you think the place is important. You will also need to supply photographs, as well as historical research if appropriate.

Step 6: Complete and return your application form. Now, the process is in full swing! writing

  • Applications can be submitted twice a year: March 1st and August 15th
  • An evaluation of the place will be done.
  • The process takes about two months to complete.

All historic places officially recognized at the municipal, provincial, and federal level will eventually be placed on the Canadian Register.
