Do you know of a historic place that is
important to your community, region, or province? You can nominate it for
formal recognition as a historic place! Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Make sure the place hasn't already been formally recognized as a historic place.
- Check the Canadian Register of Historic Places at http://www.historicplaces.ca/
- If you don’t find it on the Canadian Register, contact your local municipality
to confirm its status. It may have been
recognized but not yet listed on the Canadian Register.
Step 2: Think about what makes this place important. For example:
- Is the place associated with someone famous or a historic event?
- If it is a building or structure, is the architecture special?
- Does the place have special meaning because of its landscape, spiritual or cultural associations?
Step 3: Contact your municipal office to get the process started.
- In
BC, local governments can formally recognize a place as being important to the
history of that community through a heritage designation bylaw, which confers
legal protection on the property, or by including it in a Community Heritage
Register.
- In larger municipalities, contact the
planning department; in smaller municipalities, try the municipal clerk or
administrator. For locations outside of
municipalities, contact your regional district office. If your municipality
does not have a heritage program, have them contact the BC Heritage Branch here
