Énoncé d'importance
Description du lieu patrimonial
This generous one-and-one-half storey wood-frame house is situated on the north side of Marine Way behind mature evergreen hedging. The house is in a residential area sandwiched between Marine Way to the south and the Skytrain line to its north, in the Connaught Heights neighbourhood of New Westminster.
Valeur patrimoniale
The house and gardens at 2033 Marine Way are important for their represention of a typical housing form from the early twentieth century that occurred on large lots in New Westminster. Constructed in 1918, the house is a good example of a typical Arts and Crafts-inspired wood-frame house with decorative detailing, including wide eaves, visible roof rafters, and wide covered porch with tapered columns.
Its location between a regional road and SkyTrain is important, as it has become a tiny piece of history left in place. This becomes even more important as this house is the fourth oldest house in the Connaught Neighbourhood and is one of the few historic houses remaining in a neighbourhood where the bulk of housing began in the 1930s. The neighbourhood is important as it was the last to join New Westminster, which it did in 1965. Until then, it had been known as District Lot 172 and had its own identity unique to the two cities that abutted it: Burnaby and New Westminster.
