Description du lieu patrimonial

64 Elmwood Avenue East is on the northwest corner of Elmwood Avenue East and Edward Street in the City of London. The two-and-a-half-storey white-brick residence was constructed in 1886.

The property was designated by the City of London in 1984 for its heritage value under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law L.S.P.-2821-18).

Valeur patrimoniale

Located at a prominent corner in the City of London, 64 Elmwood Avenue East is a landmark distinguished by its architectural design and its set-back from the road. The residence is associated with the late poet and author of fiction, Arthur Stringer. Stringer lived in the home from the time it was constructed in 1886 through the 1890s. During his time at 64 Elmwood Stringer wrote Watchers of Twilight and Other Poems and The Loom of Destiny.

64 Elmwood Avenue East is a fine example of Italianate style. On the facade a bay-window extends two storeys, with a square bay-window in the wall of the second floor to the right. The windows are highlighted by voussoirs with keystones. Between the first and second storey on the facade and east elevation, a double line of string course breaks the overall exterior veneer of white brick.
