Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Dr. Honoré Cyr House is located on Principale Street, in the heart of the Saint-Basile ward of the city of Edmundston. Built around 1913, it is a 2-story American four-square residence.

Heritage Value

Dr. Honoré Cyr House is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for the contribution this physician made to the former village of Saint-Basile.

The heritage value of Dr. Honoré Cyr House lies in the beauty of its architecture and the efforts made by the current and former owners to preserve the house’s antique appearance. Built during the industrial vernacular period, the Dr. Honoré Cyr House is a 2-story example of the American four-square style of construction, which was very popular in the early 20th century.

Heritage value is also associated with the important role played by Dr. Honoré Cyr in the development of the village of Saint-Basile. When he arrived in the area in 1927, he opened his first doctor’s office. He also served as anaesthetist at the Hôtel-Dieu hospital for several years. Dr. Cyr is recognized as an important historical figure as well as a man who was dedicated to a number of causes.
