Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
Located in the Edmundston East ward, Maison des Filles de Marie de l’Assomption is a two-story brick building inspired by the International Modern Style.
Heritage Value
The heritage value of Maison des Filles de Marie de l’Assomption lies in the importance of the role played by this religious congregation in education in Madawaska County.
The congregation was established in 1922 by Msgr. Louis-Joseph-Arthur Melanson in Campbellton to teach at the new French Catholic school. Heritage value can therefore be attributed to this congregation for protecting the French language and the Catholic religion during a difficult period.
Maison des Filles de Marie de l’Assomption is also designated for its architecture. Built c1960, the building’s very simple architecture is a good example of smaller scale International Modern design.
