Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
87 Sheridan Street is located on the south side of Sheridan Street, west of Clarence Street, in the City of Brantford. The two storey, buff brick residence was constructed in circa 1887.
The property was designated, by the City of Brantford in 1993, for its heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 62-93.
Heritage Value
87 Sheridan Street was associated with two prominent community members. William Wilkinson, the principal of Central School, occupied the building from 1888 to 1905 and Henry Hoag, a local industrialist, took up residence from 1911 until 1930.
87 Sheridan Street is a good example of the Italianate style of residence that was popular in the late 19th century in Brantford. This ornate style reflects the prosperity enjoyed by Brantford residents in the 19th and 20th centuries. Typical elements of the Italianate style featured in the building include the cornice with decorative brackets, the arcade porch with balcony and the double hung windows. The truncated hip of the roof, over the east bay, makes this building particularly unique in Brantford.
