Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

176 Wellington Street is located on the north side of Wellington Street, east of Alfred Street, in the City of Brantford. The one-and-a-half storey buff brick residence was constructed in circa 1878.

The property was designated, by the City of Brantford in 1992, for its cultural heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 148-92.

Heritage Value

176 Wellington Street is associated with a variety of working class Brantford locals. During the years of 1878 to 1900 a carpenter, post office clerk, widow, gardener, carriage maker, woodworker, painter and a brakeman with the Grand Trunk Central Railway and their families all occupied this residence.

176 Wellington Street is a good example of a Brantford cottage. Typical of this style is the main entrance located in the centre of the three-bay facade. This entrance is highlighted by a semi-circular transom above the door. The roof is accented by a central gable which contains a small Gothic style double-hung window with brick voussoirs. A dominant feature of the facade is the veranda. The most significant feature on the veranda is the ornate stylish woodwork below the roof.
