Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Built around 1890, the Honoré LeBlanc Residence is a two-storey wooden saltbox style home with an extension in the back, located on Acadie Avenue in Dieppe.

Heritage Value

The Honoré LeBlanc Residence is designated a Local Historic Place because it testifies to how capable, dynamic Acadians recognized the location’s commercial potential and lay claim to Léger’s Corner. This residence housed three generations of stonecutters, two of which were master cutters to whom we owe numerous imposing structures, such as the Saint-Anselme Church and the Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Cathedral in the Dieppe region alone.

In preparation for his marriage, and to make the most of the commercial potential of the new Léger’s Corner (in the northern part of Dieppe), David Surette built this modest, yet traditional house there around 1890. However, to accommodate the widower of his recently deceased sister, as well as his own mother, who was looking after the newly motherless children, he let them have this property and bought another that suited him better. In 1894, master stonecutter Honoré LeBlanc moved into this house with his three children. He remarried in 1899. In 1912, Honoré let his second son Arthur, whom he had trained in his trade and who had just gotten married, settle in his home. Arthur became a master stonecutter like his father, and one of his sons also took up the trade.
