Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
938 Collinson Street is a two-storey, wood frame Vernacular residence located in the Fairfield neighbourhood of Victoria.
Heritage Value
The historic place, built in 1890, has value as a rare survivor of a building type.
938 Collinson Street is the only single family dwelling remaining on the north side of this block of Collinson Street. Built by George Maidment and his son Charles, this house is valued as a rare example of a once-common type of residence that was built by local carpenter/builders for their own use or on speculation. While these small carpenter-built houses do not have as much architectural significance as the mansions built for wealthy citizens, they are perhaps even more rare today because so many were demolished in the 1970s and 1980s to be replaced by multiple unit apartment blocks. That this house has survived relatively unscathed is unusual.
