Description du lieu patrimonial

Zelma United Church is a Municipal Heritage Property located on three village lots within the Village of Zelma on 2nd Avenue East. The property features a one-storey, wood-frame church constructed in 1909 surrounded by a small, open yard.

Valeur patrimoniale

The heritage value of Zelma United Church lies in the property’s historic role as the centre of Zelma’s religious life. The church was constructed in 1909 by the local Presbyterian congregation. As the only church built in the community, the property became the central place of worship, and attracted parishioners from a variety of protestant faiths. As a result, the congregation joined the Church Union Movement in 1917, which advocated the union of the Christian community in one church. In 1925, the church joined the United Church of Canada when it was formed through the amalgamation of most Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist churches in Canada. Although the property discontinued hosting regular religious services in 1982, it is still used for a variety of community and religious events each year.
