Description du lieu patrimonial

St. James Anglican Church is a Municipal Heritage Property occupying three lots in the town of Hazenmore. The property features a small clapboard-sided church erected in 1914-1915.

Valeur patrimoniale

The heritage value of St. James Anglican Church resides in its association with the early residents of Hazenmore who, in conjunction with the Church of England’s Railway Mission, built this church by 1915. St. James Anglican Church is a physical link to these early pioneers, and one example of the approximately 40 Railway Mission churches constructed in the Diocese of Qu’Appelle.

The heritage value also lies in the church’s architecture. The design is a simplified version of the standard Railway Mission church plan, including the rectangular shape and small central entryway on the west end of the church, but lacking the vestry and central steeple. The interior of this church is distinguished by the generous use of varnished fir flooring and fir “v-joint” boards that line the walls and ceiling. Around 1916 a semi-circular apse was added to the east side of the building. This addition both increased seating capacity and strengthened the simple elegance of the church. Four small stained glass windows provide a focal point above the altar.
