The John Maxwell Residence is located at 81 Albion Street on the west side of Albion Street, south of Richmond Street in the City of Brantford. The one storey clapboard cottage was constructed circa 1837.

The property was designated by the City of Brantford in 1990 for its cultural heritage value under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 13-90).

Valeur patrimoniale

The John Maxwell Residence is associated with its owner, John Maxwell, who was a prominent local citizen within to the Brantford community. Maxwell supervised the building and construction of many roads and pedestrian routes within the city.

Built circa 1837, the John Maxwell Residence is a good example of a clapboard cottage. The cottage displays the symmetrical facade and simple design characteristic of Georgian architectural styles. The front door with transom and little decoration is also reminiscent of the simple design of most Georgian homes. Fenestration includes two-over-two windows on the facade and south elevation and six-over-six windows on the north elevation.
