Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

115 Cambridge Street is a one-storey building in the style commonly known as ‘wartime house.’ It is located on a dead-end street in Woodstock, close to other homes of a similar design.

Heritage Value

115 Cambridge Street is designated a Local Historic Place because it is an exceptional example of a wartime house of the type constructed across Canada in the years following WWII and for its location. The house has undergone few structural changes since its construction in 1948. This style of home was intended to be temporary housing for military personnel and their families. The homes followed design criteria set by Wartime Housing Limited. These criteria are reflected in this one story, low-roofed and overall economically designed bungalow.

115 Cambridge Street is also recognized for its location. The house is situated among a concentration of wartime homes on Cambridge Street and the neighbouring two streets.
