Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Alcide Ferguson House is a two-storey vernacular residence with an extensive veranda located on Principale Street in the parish of Sheila in Tracadie-Sheila.

Heritage Value

The Alcide Ferguson House is designated a Local Historic Place for its age and its architecture.

The Alcide Ferguson House is one of the oldest residences in the Sheila region of Tracadie-Sheila. Reflecting the age of the building, the house is lower than the level of the road, which was raised several times. The road's proximity to the house reflects early 20th century urban planning. James Johnson, the namesake of Sheila’s Johnson Bridge, had this house built by Alexandre Sonier and his son Damien around 1900. The L-shape and the steeply pitched roof interrupted by a dormer are typical features of classical vernacular residential architecture from this period in New Brunswick. Despite a few renovations over the years, the house’s architectural value remains intact.
