Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Former Railway Station is a 1 ½ storey wooden building constructed circa 1885. It is currently located at 10617 Principale Street.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Former Railway Station as a local historic place resides in the original use of the building. From 1885 to 1900, the building served as the station for Saint-Louis-de-Kent. During this time, the Kent Northern Railway line linked Saint-Louis-de-Kent with Richibucto. The building has retained some of the original exterior and interior elements from the time of its use as a railway station.

The heritage value of the site also resides in a practice that was common from the beginning of the settlement of the village until the end of the 20th century. This practice consisted in moving a vacant building to give it a new function. After the station was abandoned, horses were used to move the structure over the frozen river to its current site, where it has since been used for different purposes.
