Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Built circa 1906, 143 McGregor Avenue is a two storey red brick residence. It is located on the west side of McGregor Avenue in close proximity to other homes of a similar age and character in the eastern end of the central residential core of Sault Ste. Marie.

143 McGregor Avenue has been recognized for its heritage value by the City of Sault Ste. Marie, By-law 91-229.

Heritage Value

Also known as the McLeod Family Residence, 143 McGregor Avenue is of heritage value as one of the least altered examples of the middle-class residences built in Sault Ste. Marie and across Northern Ontario in the early 20th century. Largely built of durable local materials, it reflects the confidence of Sault Ste Marie's Clergue Industrial Period (1894-1911), as interpreted by the merchant and professional class who built and occupied this home. It is a simple well proportioned building with an aura of modest affluence.

- circular two storey turret with conical cedar shingle roof capped with a pinnacle
