Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Located in downtown Edmundston across from the fire station and built around 1905, the 2-story architecture of the office of lawyer Jean Cyr reflects Victorian eclecticism.

Heritage Value

The office of lawyer Jean Cyr is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for the people who lived in this building.

The heritage value of the office of lawyer Jean Cyr lies in the fact that it is one of the oldest residences in the city of Edmundston. Its architecture reflecting Victorian eclecticism and some of the character-defining elements show that it draws from both the Neoclassical and the neo-Italian styles.

Heritage value is also associated with the fact that the office of lawyer Jean Cyr was initially owned by the Emmerson family, which played a major role in the development of the city of Edmundston. The building also served as the residence of several important figures, including Aaron Lawson, prominent lawyer and former mayor of Edmundston, George Burns, internationally known actor and Dodd Tweedie, prominent Edmundston lawyer.
