Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Rectory of the Sacred Heart of Mary Parish is a Municipal Heritage Property situated within the Rural Municipality of Elcapo No.154 on one lot in the Hamlet of Marieval. The property features a two-storey, wood-frame house with a large veranda constructed in 1897.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Rectory of the Sacred Heart of Mary Parish resides in the property's association with the religious history of the Crooked Lake region. The building was constructed in 1897 in conjunction with an adjoining Cowessess Residential School. In the fall of 1898, the rectory became the home to four Sisters of Notre Dame des Missions de Lyon who taught at the residential school. The Sisters remained in the Qu'Appelle Valley until 1900. At that time the rectory became home to the Oblate Brothers of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1968 the Department of Indian Affairs took control of the Residential School. The Oblate Brothers remained administrators of the school until 1971. Now a private residence, the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Rectory remains on its original location beside the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church and is one of the oldest structures in the community.

The heritage value of the property also resides in its architecture. A common residential style of the late-19th century, the building features a rectangular form, gable roof, irregular window patterns and double-hung windows. The property’s most defining characteristic is its large open verandah with decorative columns.
