Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Built circa 1860, the Captain Landry House is a one-and-a-half storey vernacular style house that was hauled from Grande-Digue circa 1884, to be installed at 420 Main Street and become the house of Captain Augustin Landry.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Captain Landry House as a local historic place resides in its association with international maritime commerce through its ties with Captain Augustin Landry (1836-1921). Captain Landry was one of the first Acadians to obtain his captain’s certificate from the British Navy. He sailed around the world several times in a schooner, sometimes with his family. He commanded several trading schooners that transported merchandise to various destinations around the world.

Heritage value is also attributed to the Captain Landry House owing to its simple one-and-a-half storey architecture, typical of the Acadian vernacular of that time. Built in 1860, a touch of the neo-classical style is detected in certain details of its construction, including the guillotine windows and the main door flanked by sidelights and a rectangular transom window. The house was hauled from Grande-Digue circa 1884.
