Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
The Stenen United Church is a Municipal Heritage Property located in the Village of Stenen. Located on a corner lot, the property features a one-storey wood-frame building with a gable roof.
Heritage Value
The heritage value of Stenen United Church resides in its association with the cultural and religious life of the region. A branch of the Mechanics and Literary Institute constructed this building on the shore of nearby Crystal Lake in 1911 to house their public library. Founded by Mary Elizabeth Raynolds Wilson shortly after homesteading nearby in 1903, the Institute operated one of Saskatchewan’s first public libraries. Mrs. Wilson donated the building to the Stenen congregation of the United Church of Canada in 1930 and it was moved to its current site. Although weekly services ceased by 1980, the building is still used periodically by the congregation.
