Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
Located with Acadia Forest Experimental Station (AFES) and fronting onto an open nursery field, Building 8, also known as the Kitchen, is a modest low-massed, single-storey, rectangular hip-roofed building constructed of brown painted smooth stucco on concrete blocks. The front entrance is a single white painted door. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.
Heritage Value
Building 8 at Acadia Forest Experimental Station is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental values.
Historical Value
Building 8, as a component of the Acadia Forest Experimental Station, is part of one of the best examples of early federal forestry station sites and federal forestry management. It is also associated with Depression-era job creation and was used as a detention camp during the Second World War. The group of buildings initially provided relief for Jewish refugees, and was subsequently used to intern German and Italian prisoners of war. Built by relief camp workers, Building 8 was used as a cookhouse and dining hall for sizable numbers of employees and also for visitors attending courses.
Architectural Value
Building 8 is a good example of a modest, utilitarian style structure of well-scaled appearance.
Environmental Value
Building 8 reinforces the character of its central streetscape setting within the Acadia Forest Experimental Station. The Acadia Forest Experimental Station is a well-known symbol within the forestry management sphere.

Character-Defining Elements
The character-defining elements of Building 8 should be respected.
Its design and good quality materials and craftsmanship, for example:
- the simple, low, rectangular massing;
- the one-storey, hip-roofed construction of brown painted smooth stucco on concrete blocks;
- the entrance consisting of a single white painted door.
The manner in which Building 8 reinforces the central streetscape character within the Acadia Forest Experimental Station setting and is a strong regional landmark evidenced by:
- its compatibility with the modest group of buildings that front onto an open nursery field and create a ‘Main Street’ feel;
- its contribution to the station’s strong local and international reputation through the forestry management activities carried out in the building.
