Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Box Residence is located at 57 High Street, on the west side of High Street, north of Market Street, in Seaforth, in the Municipality of Huron East. The one-and-a-half-storey red-brick residence was constructed in 1927.

The property was designated, by the former Town of Seaforth, (now Municipality of Huron East) in 1990, for its heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 27(1990).

Heritage Value

The Box Residence, constructed in 1927, has elements of a Queen Anne style residence. Identifying features include the irregular plan and cross-gabled roof. Fluted Doric columns on the front porch and the leaded glass window heads add delicacy to the building's overall impression. Of particular interest, is the use of cast-stone for the foundation and porch supports, which is not common for the Queen Anne style. The house also includes original wood panelled doors on both the front and the side of the house, as well as, decorative garlands over the windows of the front bay.
