Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

844 George Street is an Edwardian-inspired two-storey brick structure that was constructed for George F. Wilkes in 1902. It is located on the south side of George Street on a lot of land originally owned by G.E. Fenety in the block between Church Street and University Avenue.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of 844 George Street resides not only in its construction but in its location. This two-storey brick structure is significant as it was built at a time when most houses in this area were built of wood. The brick Edwardian-inspired construction is suggestive of the relative success enjoyed by confectionery store proprietor and original owner, George F. Wilkes. This building was erected on land owned George Edward Fenety, a former mayor of Fredericton. At the turn of the 20th century, the Fenety Estate sold a number of building lots in this area creating a modest building boom, including the construction of Mr. Wilkes’ house at 844 George Street.
