Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Duguay Residence, located on J. D. Gauthier Boulevard, was built around 1885. It is a one-and-a-half-storey house of Maritime vernacular architecture.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Duguay Residence lies in its historical significance. It is on the list of the oldest dwellings in the Town of Shippagan. It was first built for Mr. Aimé Duguay and Mrs. Olésine Marie Hébert in around 1885.

Its heritage value also lies in its architectural significance. This Maritime Vernacular structure was built in a style that was common at the time. This modest style is apparent in the massing of the building and the central gable dormer on the front slope of the roof. There is also an old summer kitchen that was used for cooking meals in hot weather.
