Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Thompson-Landry Building, located on the south side of Main Street in Shediac, is a wooden, two-storey vernacular commercial building built circa 1880. It is part of the oldest commercial block in town.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Thompson-Landry Building as a local historic place lies in its association with the town’s oldest commercial block. Considered to be one of the oldest in the Acadian Maritimes, this block is made up of four buildings: Moulée Poirier, the Ouellet Tinsmith and Hardware Store, the Canada Customs/Ovila LeBlanc Building, and the Thompson-Landry Building. The latter was occupied by various businesses over the years, including Thompson’s dry goods store, a Chinese restaurant, and the Landry Brothers’ furniture and hardware store. Despite having undergone numerous transformations in order to accommodate the various businesses it has housed, it maintains its boomtown appearance.
