Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
Located in a residential neighbourhood of early 20th century buildings, the Roderick and Ethel Smith House is a one-and-a-half-storey Colonial Revival home.
The Roderick and Ethel Smith House has been recognized for its heritage value by the Town of Aurora By-law #4848.06R.
Heritage Value
The Roderick and Ethel Smith House is a good example of a Colonial Revival home, relatively rare in Aurora. Its first owners, had the house built in 1941 and occupied it until 1989. Rod Smith was a prominent resident of Aurora, a Hydro commissioner who served on Town Council from 1944 to 1946.
Although of relatively recent vintage, the house is a rare example of an architecturally designed house built in Aurora during the Second World War. It features classic examples of the Colonial Revival style, which was based on the historic architecture of Cape Cod.
The Roderick and Ethel Smith House contributes greatly to an intact neighbourhood of well-maintained early 20th century Arts and Crafts, Bungalow and Edwardian residences. Originally known as the Rose Mount subdivision, the house fits well into the streetscape of mostly pre-WWII houses.
