Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Located in downtown Edmundston on Canada Road, Emmerson House is a one-and-a-half storey bungalow, a popular style from 1910 to 1930. This former residence was built around 1920.

Heritage Value

Emmerson House is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its role in the community.

Emmerson House is recognized for being a good example of bungalow architecture that was very popular from 1910 to 1930. This style is reflected in the form, massing and details of the building. A unique feature of the house is that many of its elements were custom-built to accommodate the great height of John Emmerson, the first owner of the house.

Emmerson House is also recognized for its current and historic functions in the community. It currently serves as a tourism office and the Chamber of Commerce. Over the years, it has housed such integral community entities as Atelier RADO, the community radio station, and a doctor’s office.
