Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

702 Main Street is a two-and-a-half storey Classic Revival residence built in the late 19th century and features ‘heavy’ wooden decoration. Its main entrance and porch face Cross Street, in Woodstock, giving the home an unusual orientation.

Heritage Value

702 Main Street is designated a Local Historic Place as a good example of late 19th century Classical Revival residential architecture in Woodstock.

The building’s highly decorated exterior is demonstrative of late 19th-century ornamentation in a motif ‘heavier’ than most of Woodstock’s period homes. This is especially notable in the dormers and brackets on the west and south elevations. The home is unusual in that it faces south towards Cross Street. Most homes on Main Street face west onto Main, or east towards the St. John River. The reason for this orientation is unknown.
