Heritage Value

St. John’s and St. Luke’s Cemetery is designated a Local Historic Place for being the resting place of two protestants congregations.

St. John’s and St. Luke’s Cemetery is recognized for being shared by two congregations: St. John's Presbyterian Church and St. Luke's Methodist Church, each having their own area of the cemetery. Both of these churches once stood in the former Town of Chatham. It is the resting place of many of Chatham's early merchants, community leaders and persons of local stature. Burials date back to 1810 with the property being officially purchased by the churches in 1836. The last interment is believed to have been in 1947.
