Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
Brander's Store is a wooden, two-and-a-half-storey vernacular Classic Revival commercial building with a ground-floor storefront. It is located on Newcastle Boulevard within the Newcastle Merchant Business District in Miramichi.
Heritage Value
Brander’s Store is designated a Local Historic Place for its association with the Brander family and for its architecture.
Brander's Store is recognized for its association with dry goods merchant, John Brander, who set up business in Newcastle in 1861. His son, Gordon, carried on the family business at this location and served term as mayor of Newcastle, now part of the City of Miramichi.
Brander’s Store, constructed circa 1872, is a good example of mid-19th century vernacular Classic Revival commercial architecture in Newcastle. It one of the oldest buildings within the commercial district, having escaped several neighbouring fires a century ago. It still exhibits many façade and storefront elements that define Classic Revival commercial architecture from this period in Miramichi.
