Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Thomas Phelan House is a two-storey, early 20th century Queen Anne residence situated within a grouping of period homes. It is located on Phelan Street in the City of Miramichi.

Heritage Value

Thomas Phelan House is designated a Local Historic Place for its association with the owner, joiner Thomas Phelan, as well as for its architecture.

Thomas Phelan learned his trade from working alongside his father who settled here on the Miramichi. He resided and worked from his residence until his death. He contributed to the community in the construction of many homes within the area. The residence is remarkably original and its ownership has remained within the family.

Thomas Phelan House is also valued for its architectural significance as a rare example of a Queen Anne residence in this area. Built circa 1910 by Thomas Phelan, this residence exhibits traditional elements of this style in its form and details.
