Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Constructed circa 1880, 19 King Street East is a two and a half storey brick commercial building located on the south side of King Street East in downtown Bowmanville, now part of the Municipality of Clarington.

19 King Street East has been recognized for its heritage value by the Municipality of Clarington, By-law 90-185.

Heritage Value

19 King Street East is a representative example of commercial buildings constructed on King Street in Bowmanville towards the end of the 19th century (c1880). This two and a half storey brick building is part of the Bleakley Block. Distinguished by its mansard roof, many of the original architectural and decorative features remain intact. 19 King Street East contributes greatly to the overall 19th century heritage character of present day downtown Bowmanville.

Character-Defining Elements

- the slightly arched second storey windows
- the original glass panels which feature copper games and bevelled glass medallions
