Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

BA Service Station, built circa 1953, is located on Amirault Street in Dieppe. The building is a rectangular one-storey cement-block structure with a flat roof.

Heritage Value

BA Service Station is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its early association with the sale of gasoline and car repairs.

BA Service Station was built around 1953. The building is a rectangular one-storey cement-block structure with a flat roof. Its architecture is representative of the post-World War II era when oil companies adopted a functional style. This led to the appearance, in the case of the British American Oil Company, of a distinctive style of oblong boxes. This service station is one of the few from that era that still exist in south eastern New Brunswick.

BA Service Station is associated with its role as the first service station on the road from Dieppe to Memramcook prior to 1960. As an essential service for travellers between those two rural centres, the name of its innovator, Philippe Cormier, has remained in the popular consciousness.
