Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Glenwood Provincial Park is a 22.5 hectare provincial park located alongside Route 17 in the small community of Glenwood, 17 kilometers north of the village of Saint-Jean Baptiste de Restigouche.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of Glenwood Provincial Park as a historic place lies in its being New Brunswick’s first provincial park and in its historic use as a rest stop.

Glenwood Provincial Park is designated a Provincial Historic Site for being the province's first provincial park, which was established in 1935. Its recognized natural elements include its mixed forest of spruce and hardwoods. In 1985, a massive granite monument was erected to commemorate the establishment of this first provincial park.

The heritage value of this place also lies in its importance as a rest area and stop for travellers, providing them with a place where they could let their vehicles cool down after tackling the steep slopes of the nearby Upsalquitch Hill. It offered the usual amenities of a rest stop, with washroom facilities and picnic areas.
