Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Hutman’s Store is a 2-story mercantile building located on Canada Road in downtown Edmundston.

Heritage Value

Hutman's Store is designated a Local Historic Place for its longevity in Edmundston’s business life and for its architecture.

Hutman’s Store is recognized for its 70 years of operation in the Edmundston area. Since c1938, Hutman's Store has contributed to the city’s economic growth by selling clothing, shoes, and toys to the people of Edmundston. The store underwent its first expansion in 1949 and then expanded again in 1961. Hutman's Store stood out, and continues to stand out, for its incomparable customer service, provided by a dynamic team.

Hutman’s Store, originally built c1918 and designed by Robert Hammond, is a good example of a 2-story mercantile-style building. Its modest details include a parapet wall hiding the roof and period storefront design.
