Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Elizabeth Manor is a three storey Second Empire building located at 021 Military Road, St. John’s. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Heritage Value

021 Military Road, Elizabeth Manor, has been designated for its aesthetic value.

021 Military Road is a beautiful example of a Second Empire style building. It has a Mansard roof with bonnetted dormers. The second story has cantelivered bow windows and dentils and there are brackets along the eaves line. Each bow window has moulded fascia boards and a unique curved detail at the underside of the windows. The main floor features two three paned windows with a curved detail linking the tops of these windows with the bows located just above. The main entrance has a heavy bracketed entablature with pilasters, a transom, dentils and side lights. The house is sheathed in narrow wooden siding and it has wide corner boards and returned eaves. This building is currently being used as a bed and breakfast.
