Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

548 St. George Street, also known as the King George Inn, is a circa 1885 Italianate style house. Located on a main street in Annapolis Royal, NS, this brightly painted residential building is a local landmark. The description includes the house and surrounding property.

Heritage Value

548 St. George Street is valued as an excellent example of the Italianate style, as recognized by its municipal designation. The house has been relatively unaltered and retains many of its original features. The most notable features are the two, two storey offset segmental bays are decorated with recessed panels and a tower with four segmental windows per side over a decorative dentil belt course.

Character-defining elements of 548 St. George Street relate to its Italianate style and include:

- elaborately trimmed, two storey, wood frame;
- low sloped hip roof with offset joined brick chimney;
- two, two storey bays with three windows per floor and decorative recessed panels;

- central wooden doorway with transom and side lights covered with gabled porch;
