Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Escuminac Disaster Monument Provincial Historic Site consists of the site of the commemorative sculpture by Claude Roussel overlooking the Escuminac Wharf, in the Village of Escuminac, Northumberland County. The sculpture recognizes the Escuminac Disaster.

Heritage Value

On June 20, 1959, a devastating storm in Northumberland Strait took the lives of thirty-five fishermen. This event has been described as one of the province’s most tragic natural disasters. This tragedy, which shocked the nation, witnessed heroic acts of bravery and lifesaving seamanship.

The commemorative sculptured statue of three fishermen is by well-known New Brunswick artist Claude Roussel. Lord Beaverbrook, one of New Brunswick’s greatest benefactors, commissioned the work of art for the community’s 10th anniversary of the catastrophe.
