Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Mary Boland House, built in the first decade of the 1900s, is a two storey saltbox style house located in Calvert, NL. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Heritage Value

The Mary Boland House is designated because of its architectural significance.

The building has architectural value as it is one of a few remaining examples of saltbox construction in the Southern Shore region. This form of vernacular construction, featuring a two-room ground floor plan with a central chimney and back linhay, was common among first generation settlers in Calvert, and surrounding communities, and was an accepted form of early housing throughout Newfoundland. Built in the early twentieth century, this well preserved house stands as a testament to the permanence and adaptability of this form through generations.
