Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
125 Grand River Avenue is located on the north side of Grand River Avenue, east of Scarfe Avenue, in the City of Brantford. The one-and-a-half storey, buff brick residence was constructed in circa 1880.
The property was designated, by the City of Brantford in 2006, for its cultural heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 116-2006.
Heritage Value
Located north of the Grand River, the character of this historic residence is representative of the surrounding neighbourhood at a time when houses were located in close proximity to industries, mills and manufacturing facilities.
This residence is an excellent example of the Italianate style of architecture. The front centre gable features a curled peak finial and a triple arch bargeboard with ornate detailing. A significant characteristic of the front gable attic wall is the segmented arch window, with two-over-two double hung sashes, framed by white wooden shutters. All visible windows host the same pane arrangement and segmented arch heads in red and white soldier brick. Another distinctive element of the front facade is the front porch, supported by columns, on buff brick pedestals. This porch leads to the entrance door that has a single light transom. The west gable wall, at the roof ridge, projects a brick chimney shaft with corbelled brick head.
