Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Victoria Park is bordered by Victoria Street to the west, Chalk Street South to the east and Gouinlock Street to the north, in the Town of Seaforth, in the Municipality of Huron East. Victoria Park is a municipal park that was established in 1875.

The property was designated, by the former Town of Seaforth, now the Municipality of Huron East, in 1977, for its heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 1058.

Heritage Value

Victoria Park is a community meeting place for the residents of the Town of Seaforth. The land was donated for the park in 1875 by a prominent local doctor, Dr. W. C. Gouinlock. A war memorial, located at the west end of the park was erected after the First World War, with additional names added after World War II.

Victoria Park is a good example of a small 19th century park. Located on a rectangular lot, the tall, mature trees provide shade and enhance the restful and refreshing character of the park. In 1920, a clapboard bandshell was added creating a focal point.
