Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The George Kincaide Residence is a Craftsman style three-storey multiple dwelling. This wooden building is located on Leinster in an urban area of Saint John.

Heritage Value

The George Kincaide Residence is designated a Local Historic place for its architecture and for its era of construction.

This building has a large cornice with modillions that form a good example of the false rafter aesthetic of the Craftsman style. The façade has a projecting rectangular bay. The side entry porch is set into the front façade with typically Craftsman-style wooden elements such as a panelled ceiling and a slender ornamental high railing. The residence was built as a multiple dwelling in 1930 for grocer George Kincaide. This building was built during the Great Depression and times were hard for men such as Mr. Kincaide who operated a grocery store on Union Street in Saint John. This building represents a reserved example of the Craftsman style during this era of commercial hardship.
