Description of Historic Place

The Hansen Residence is located at 23 Sparling Street, on the east side of Sparling Street, south of Goderich Street West, in Seaforth, in the Municipality of Huron East. The one-and-a-half storey, white brick residence was constructed in 1885.

The property was designated, by the former Town of Seaforth (now Municipality of Huron East) in 1978, for its heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 12 (1978).

Heritage Value

The Hansen Residence is a one-and-a-half storey, white brick residence that was built in 1885, by Philip Sparling. The residence is a good representation of houses built in the Seaforth area during the late nineteenth century. It features deep projecting eaves, finely detailed yet massive wooden brackets and a steeply pitched roof, with three large brick chimneys on either side. Other defining features include two peaked gables on the façade, arched windows and two large bay windows, on the first floor. Also of note is the large wrap-around veranda on the façade.
