Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Arnold Kee House is a two-storey, brick, Dutch Colonial Revival style residence located on a high section of Pitt Street on a large lot close to Courtney Bay in Saint John's South End.

Heritage Value

The Arnold Kee House is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture. The home is a rare example of the Dutch Colonial Revival style in Saint John's Central Peninsula. It has a broad Dutch gambrel roof that extends over the front of the house creating a barn like effect. The lateral wing was common in this style, as compared to early Dutch Colonial homes that had fewer rooms. Typical of the Colonial Revival style the window proportions are 6 over 1. The upper storey has a long shed dormer with three openings. Colonial Revival homes were popular all over North America at the time when this house was built in the 1930's by postmaster Arnold Kee. This represents a handsome, fashionable house for the time.
