Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Former École des Mallet includes a house and its grounds located on J. D. Gauthier Boulevard in Shippagan. Built in 1929, the residence is a one-and-a-half-storey institutional vernacular structure with a sloped roof and a shed dormer on either slope.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Former École des Mallet lies in its historical interest. The building, located at 276 J. D. Gauthier Boulevard, was formerly the “École des Mallet”, which was built in 1929 to form the fifth department of the superior school, and it served students from grades one to five from the southern part of Shippagan. The school teachers were Victoria Lacroix (1930-1933), Laurina Landry (1933-1936) and finally Winnifred Battah (1936-1943). The institution closed its doors around 1943.

The site also has heritage value associated with its ethnological interest. The residence is closely linked to the history of education in this part of the town of Shippagan. It is all the more representative, as it plays a role in the heritage of the Mallet family, one of the founding families of Shippagan. The original land was owned by the Mallet family and the subsequent owners of this building are also of this same family.
