Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
This Centre Gable style farmhouse is located on a hill overlooking the north branch of the Montague River at Knox's Dam. It has a gable roofline, wood shingle cladding, and a symmetrical facade.
Heritage Value
The house is valued for its Centre Gable style and its association with the Campbell family.
The property was first settled by Donald D. Campbell (1810-1882). It was part of the Montgomery Estate. Campbell named his property Mount Pleasant Farm. He initally constructed a crude house on the farm. All that remains of this is a cellar depression. The current house was constructed around 1860 and is one of the oldest remaining homes in the area.
Campbell also operated a saw and grist mill at Knox's Dam on the Montague River. This is shown on maps of the area dating from 1852 and 1863. This mill property was later sold to Charles Keith in 1882 at the time of Donald's death.
The house remains in the Campbell family today and despite some renovations and replacement windows, retains its Centre Gable style and symmetrical facade.
