Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
Otho Robichaud Historic Place consists of a piece of land that was formerly part of the original property of Otho Robichaud, now located on Otho Street in Neguac. The designation also includes a house originally owned by the Robichaud family.
Heritage Value
Otho Robichaud Historic Place is designated Provincial Historic Place for its association with the family of Otho Robichaud, an Acadian Justice of the Peace in northeastern New Brunswick.
Otho Robichaud, a survivor of the Deportation of the Acadians, settled in Neguac, where he became a community and regional leader. He was Justice of the Peace and a church warden for Saint-Bernard Parish. He also carried out several duties within Northumberland County’s local government. Otho Robichaud Historic Place consists of a 22,700-m2 property that was part of Otho Robichaud’s original property purchased in 1781. The current site contains a house that is believed to have been owned by Otho’s son, Louis Robichaud, who also served as a Justice of the Peace. The office and bedroom have been preserved.
